Lauryn Hill has long been hailed as the queen of her craft, despite the fact that her solo career currently only consists of one studio album, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill and an MTV Unplugged performance album that many rank one of her best works, Lauryn’s fans still believe that her talent and early works as one part of the legendary rap group The Fugees is enough to crown Lauryn as one of the best to ever do it.
At any given moment Hill can step on stage and her adoring fans welcome her back with open arms, much like D’Angelo, Lauryn stepped away from the spotlight abruptly leaving her fans wondering “What happened to Lauryn?” After her first Grammy award winning album we have waited for her next project but Lauryn seems to be over all the fame and glory.
For years her fans speculated that Hill was going though, personal issues revolving around her relationship with her long time partner, and the father of five of her six children Rohan Marley, but she insisted that her leave from the spotlight had nothing to do with her love life. After her ex bandmate Wyclef Jean wrote in his memoir that his turbulent relationship with Lauryn was ultimately the reason behind the band breaking up, many began to wonder if that was also the reason for Hill’s decision to step out of the spotlight, but Lauryn has remained tightlipped about the details of her personal life, while leaving her fans lost.
After spending a short time in prison for Tax evasion Lauryn started performing again in small venues, however the reviews are varied. Some concert goers insist that Lauryn is making a come back, while others felt cheated after waiting hours only for her to be a no show. Currently Lauryn is set to perform another round of shows but her fans are on the fence wondering if she will even show up at all.
This week Lauryn once again has left her supporters in the dust as she skipped out on her Grammy appearance, and Lauryn’s reps released a statement explaining what went wrong.
“Any performance that could have happened was never confirmed, and should not have been advertised as such. Ms. Hill was invited to do a collaboration with an artist she appreciates. The performance was intended to be a surprise and unfortunately due to its last-minute nature, was unable to come to fruition.”
Hill’s reps also claim that Hill never gave her word that she would perform.
“The Grammys announced a performance by Ms. Lauryn Hill prematurely and without approval. Ms. Hill had concerts all weekend, leaving no time to prepare, and was uncertain she would even be able to make it to L.A. in time to rehearse for the event.”
Apparently Lauryn was invited to perform with The Weeknd at the 2016 Grammys, and while she now insists that the deal was never set in stone, Recording Academy President Neil Portnow says that Hill showed up for dress rehearsals and was set to perform until minutes before the actual set.
“We had rehearsals off-site that she didn’t attend, but we had a dress rehearsal onstage that she did attend,” Portnow insists. “When it came to showtime, we were told she was late, three minutes to seven minutes out, but she didn’t make it.”
Regardless of the reason for Lauryn flaking out on the Grammys, it doesn’t change the fact that being MIA has become a trend of her and its taking a toll on her reputation. SIS, get it together, we miss you!
